Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences has secured a spot among the world's top 1,000 universities and placed second nationally among medical universities, according to the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking.

The university placed in the 901–1000 band globally and fourth nationally overall, according to a report from the university's Public Relations Office for International Affairs. Only two medical universities, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, along with four non-medical universities, Tehran University, Amirkabir University of Technology, Sharif University of Technology, and Tarbiat Modares University, made this year's list of top 1,000 universities nationally. 

The Shanghai Ranking, published annually, evaluates roughly 2,500 universities worldwide and releases final standings for the top 1,000. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious research-based rankings, ARWU relies on data from independent, authenticated international sources rather than universities' self-reported figures.

To qualify for review, universities must have affiliated Nobel laureates, Fields Medalists, or Highly Cited Researchers as designated by Clarivate, or have published research in Nature or Science. Universities with a substantial number of papers indexed in the Science Citation Index–Expanded (SCIE) or Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are also considered.

The ranking weighs four main categories: quality of education (alumni winning Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals, 10 percent; faculty winning the same awards, 20 percent), quality of faculty (Highly Cited Researchers, 20 percent), research output (papers in Nature and Science, and papers indexed in SCIE/SSCI, 20 percent each), and per capita academic performance (10 percent).
